2014 Color of the Year
So it seems all the design professionals are in agreement this year: Purple = Pretty. Rarely do the Pantone Color of the Year and Sherwin Williams Color of the Year ever coincide, but this year (and probably in years following) we are all singing purple’s praises.
Pantone Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid, a peony pink with violet undertones. I love the depth and extent of research the Pantone Color Institute undergoes to predict rising color trends around the world, across all sectors of fashion and design.

“To distill the prevailing mood into a single hue, the PCI team, led by executive director Leatrice Eiseman, combs the world looking for future design and color influences, watching out for that one color seen as ascending and building in importance through all creative sectors. Influences can include the entertainment industry, upcoming films, art, emerging artists, travel destinations and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, lifestyles + playstyles, new textures and effects that impact color, and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.” – Executive Director of Pantone, Leatrice Eiseman
Sherwin Williams chose SW6263, Exclusive Plum. This almost-aubergine has long been one of my favorite hues, and certainly my personal purple favorite. The essence of Exclusive Plum is summed up nicely below.
I have loved seeing how often these purple variations are found together. The marry so nicely – the pop of the orchid with the depth of the plum. Some of our favorite variations on these hues are below. Punctuate your spaces with purple!
