Do you need a Design Professional

This industry has so many moving parts, so many hands on every project, that it can be extremely difficult to discern who to hire for which project. By answering a series of questions and exploring the skill sets of built industry professionals, you may easily decipher which type and level of design services would be most suited for your residential project.

First, you must define the parameters of your project and determine which category it falls under. For example, are you building a new home or remodeling an existing home?

Next, determine the scale of your project. What is the extent of your remodeling or new construction? Are you building a completely customized home? Or, are you remodeling and wanting to move load-bearing walls? Are you gutting a portion of your residence – a kitchen or bathroom perhaps? Maybe you need an expert in historic restoration. Are you needing selections made for a living room update – new furniture, paint, millwork, or window coverings, for example? Do you just need guidance on how to incorporate color into your home?

If the scale of your project is larger, you will most likely need highly trained, skilled, and experienced Architectural and Design (A&D) professionals. Even if your project is smaller, though – like color guidance or furniture selections – you would still certainly benefit from an experienced interior designer would would have the knowledge and resources to expedite those changes beautifully and effortlessly.

Now let’s explore skill sets of different A&D professionals. Please note that there tends to be much overlap in skill sets among the professions in this industry. However, it is still useful to define your project’s goals and objectives. Consider your non-negotiables – those things you have to have to live and function in your space on a daily basis. What are the problems you want resolved? Make a list and communicate these issues with your architect or designer!

It would also be useful (and fun!) to go ahead and create a Pinterest board, start Instagraming inspirations you see while you are out and about. Or, simply start compiling a binder of magazine cutouts, fabric, photographs, artwork – anything and everything that inspires you and will help communicate your style and preferences to your design professional. And make notes! What compelled you to rip out that kitchen from your favorite magazine? Was it a color, a piece of furniture, light fixture, overall feel or emotion? The more details, the better. We want your space to be a reflection of you.

See this chart below for an explanation of the skills sets of different design professionals.
